About

Doug Laustsen is a very busy music generalist.

He spends his days as a music educator, teaching in an urban elementary and middle school in north New Jersey.  He has worked with students from age 5 to 18 in both instrumental music and general music settings. His experience includes both urban and suburban settings, and he has spent time in both regular schools and arts magnet programs for gifted young musicians. He has done time as an assistant director of a high school marching band, and has been recognized as his district as a guest conductor for its select ensembles.

Additionally he is a trombonist who plays in a variety of ensembles between Philadelphia and New York City. He is one of the founders of Beta Test, a geeky chamber ensemble. He also enjoys playing in his local community band, the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, as a way to explore music making in the community. He is regularly hired to play in both ceremonial ensembles and orchestras.

He also spends time composing and arranging music, which has been performed by both professional and educational ensembles in the Tri State area. His music can be found on New Music Shelf. He is currently working on music and sound design for a radio drama.

Finally, he hosts a weekly radio show on WRSU-FM called Endless Possibilities. The show is generally programmed without a specific format but has a certain fondness for contemporary music of all stripes. It also is the vehicle for the somewhat regular segment Explorations, which strives to feature under recognized new works.
